In this paper we describe a traffic shaping mechanism, which yields efficient implementation in hardware and can be used as a component of System-on-Chip network processors and switches. The proposed design can shape both fixed size cell and variable length packet based traffic at very high speeds, for a large number of flows and with high accuracy. The shaper has been implemented and integrated in the design of a protocol processor. The impact of the system architecture in the shaper design, as well as the implementation cost and performance of the shaper are analyzed. |
