The Greek government ordered the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR) to execute a search and recovery operations for the Hellenic Army Chinook helicopter that crashed into the North Aegean Sea. The HCMR undertook the search for the crashed helicopter, found the accident site, and recovered the bodies of the victims. More than 20 different operations were carried out in all during the location and recovery stages, using various prototypes methods, to recover more than 90% of the crashed helicopter. All the operations were carried out under the coordination of the Hellenic Navy, which provided the hydrographic ship, Naftilos, as the recovery vessel and the Ikaria as support vessel. Both the vessels worked in close proximity to one another and both had ropes and cables extending to the seabed. The recovery operation is one of the best operations of its kind not only for Greece, but also for international community. |
