The rational management of subsurface water resources is a key for sustainable development of a coastal region. A variety of classical and heuristic optimization methodologies have been properly adopted by researchers to first describe and then solve the multidimensional water coverage problem that is mainly responsible for the development of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers. The aim of this paper is an extensive review and discussion of the mathematical characteristics of the various design formulations and the optimization approaches that were applied over the last two decades to explain analyze and manage the evolution of seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers. Special consideration also is given to classify the environmental impacts of seawater intrusion into the natural and anthropogenic coastal environment. |
