ARQ protocols are typically used by the data link layer of computer communication networks in order to ensure reliable communication over a noisy channel. Two of them, namely the Stop-and-Wait and the Go-Back-N ARQ protocol have been successfully analyzed in the past. Discrete time stochastic models have been employed for this purpose. The effect of the use of the mentioned protocols on the performance of general topology computer networks (loops excluded) has also been studied. We investigate the properties of ring topology networks using the Stop-and-Wait or the Go-Back-N ARQ protocols. Discrete time GI/G/1 queueing models are used and the underlying Markov chains are described. The performance measures of the protocols are computed for each network node. The performance of the resulting algorithm is tested for various packet arrival distributions. The analytical results are compared with the results of extended simulation runs. |
