heal.abstract This paper describes the prospects of improving the air pollution situation in urban areas by means of traffic control measures introduced under different emission control scenarios. A major feature of this work consists of test modelling studies applied in the region of Athens. The required reduction in traffic levels was found to vary according to the scenario and emission control alternatives. Evidence suggests that emission control systems may be less effective than anticipated due to prevailing traffic conditions and deterioration with use. These factors would lead to underestimation of emissions and the resultant concentration of pollutants. The advocated approach is based on source-receptor relationships and surveillance plans using information technologies. en
