heal.abstract	In this paper, an automated system able to measure performance in field sports is presented. The system can detect automatically the length of jumps and triple jumps as well as the position of throws in field sports. The method of detection is based on an application-specific magnetostrictive delay line set-up, using the delay time due to the acoustic signal propagation. The system is able to perform measurements with an accuracy better than I mm, thus overcoming the present semi-automatic or manual techniques of measurement. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
