heal.abstract	This paper analyses the perspectives and highlights the path for the realisation of all-optical packet switching as opposed to circuit switching that is currently exploited in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) core networks. We present the state-of-the-art all-optical signal-processing concepts and technologies that are required to implement optical packet-switched broadband networks. We investigate also the economic viability of these networks and their impact on telecommunications carriers in terms of cost reduction and revenues increase.	en
