The increasingly ageing population and the healthcare expenses explosion urge for innovative solutions strongly related to prevention, improvement of quality of life and maintaining an independent life as long as possible. Therefore, the core of the BIOTELEKINESY project is to provide an innovative ICT based interface with a holistic approach to detect and prevent as early as possible in the daily environment of the elderly person, motion disabilities and as a consequence fall risks. It consists of a monitoring and assessing device, to gather biomechanics data indicating locomotion impairments, related to a secure interoperability system interconnecting and facilitating the elderly, the healthcare providers and the family to early implement appropriate rehabilitation therapies. In this paper, the approach used for the development of the communication platform is discussed as well as its remote non invasive and real time gait assessment system. © 2010 IEEE. |
