The dynamic stability of the Hellenic Interconnected Power System is analyzed with a linear multimachine model, whose form allows some insight into the system characteristics. The various electromechanical oscillation modes are identified and the effect of the excitation systems on the damping of these modes is investigated. For high values of excitation system transient gain, the system becomes unstable, one of its oscillatory modes assuming negative damping. A parameter optimization algorithm is applied which yields two different sets of excitation settings (depending on imposed constraints) both of which are adequate for stable operation, preserving also the high transient gain. In this sense the power stations on which fast static exciters should be installed are selected and the use of Power System Stabilizers is avoided. The results are tested with a nonlinear simulation program. |
