The plastic zones developed around the tips of the cracks in glassy polymers under small scale yielding can be studied by using the two well-known pressure-modified Mises yield criteria and the elastic solution of the problem. This paper reports on a study in which the shape of the plastic zone was given when a crack approaches perpendicularly a bi-material interface. The study was based on the exact elastic solution of the problem and the resulting integral equation is solved numerically. This is justified only for incipient plasticity. The plastic zones are calculated using, either the exact solution, or Sneddon's asymptotic expansion for comparison. It was found that the difference between the exact and the approximate plastic zones is increasing as plasticity is developed and as distance increases from the singular zone around the crack tip. |
