A simple and efficient method for exchanging digital pictures between remote processing units is presented. Images are handled in a hierarchical form that facilitates progressive means of transmission. The method is based on a breadth-first traversal coding of the quadtree image structures. The receiver can identify the incoming data in real-time by using a rather simple logic; it can directly reconstruct the quadtree of the received image and/or drive a raster graphics display. |
