An experimental analysis was undertaken for the characterization of paper sheets as regards their mechanical and fracture behaviour. Strains were experimentally measured using foil gauges and the differential moire method. Critical stress intensity factors were evaluated by an improved version of the method of reflected caustics, which yields caustics generated by very small initial curves around the crack tips. The slowly propagating cracks in paper were recorded by a sensitive video arrangement. Results are presented which indicate that orthotropy does affect the direction of crack propagation. |
