heal.abstract A method of assessing the contribution of various pollution sources is developed. The method is based on developing mass balances for pollutants coming from various sources. One or more sources of reacting or inert pollutants can be 'classified' easily and the contribution of every source to the 'measured' concentration of pollutant can be assessed. Application of this method is done by using a two-equation turbulence model ( κ-ε) and pollutant mass balances with different reaction and dispersion time scales. The orders of reaction used in this work are first and second but a more complex reaction mechanism can easily be used. Results of this work show that the relative contribution of sources is not linearly dependent on their emission ratios but follows a complicated pattern which depends also on the distribution of the emission sources in space and the reaction kinetics. The method is based on fundamental principles and appears to be very promising for assessing the contribution of point, line and area sources to the overall pollution problem. en
