heal.abstract Following the selection of PSS application site, the paper applies a parameter optimisation technique, which was successfully used for the tuning of generator controllers (without PSS) in order to maximise the damping of electromechanical oscillations, to the problem of co-ordinated PSS and Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) tuning in a multimachine power system. The algorithm used for the parameter optimisation is essentially a gradient projection method which forces the critical electromechanical oscillation eigenvalues as far as possible towards the left in the complex plane. The application of the method described here to a realistic model of the Hellenic interconnected power system with ten equivalent generators, used also in earlier studies has given very encouraging results by providing acceptable damping to a heavily loaded, initially unstable operating point of the system. en
