The paper describes a plasticity-based model for the description of structured soils. The model distinguishes between 'plastic yielding' and 'appreciable de-structuring' and simulates the initial high stiffness and strength and their progressive reduction due to structure degradation. Other features include a general-purpose damage-type mechanism for structure degradation, description of the evolution of stress-induced and structure-induced anisotropy, adaptable sophistication depending on the available test data and formulation in tensorial space to facilitate its incorporation in finite element codes. The predictive capabilities of the model are demonstrated using the results of tests on the stiff overconsolidated Vallericca clay. |
