The seismic response of a long and narrow alluvial basin (valley) in the island of Cefalonia has been monitored with four digital accelerometers - two on the surface near the center of the valley, one at a depth of 38 m below the surface in a stiff layer of marl, and one on outcroping limestone at one of the edges of the valley. A nearby earthquake event of M(S) 4.2 has produced valuable records, with peak accelerations of 0.055 g and 0.040 g at the surface, 0.017 g at -38 m and 0.020 g at rock outcrop. One-dimensional (1-D) analyses could not explain the nature and amplitude of these recorded motions. This paper presents the results of a two-dimensional (2-D) wave-propagation analysis using the spectral-element code AHNSE and modeling the seismic excitation as vertically incident S waves compatible with the (base) motion recorded at -38 m. The agreement of the numerically reproduced ground surface motions with the corresponding records is satisfactory. The results of the study reveal the profound significance of the triangular shape of the valley to amplify the seismic waves in the presence of small levels of damping. |
