heal.abstract | The introduction of industrial solid by-products possessing cementitious and pozzolanic properties into the construction sector has nowadays become a worldwide trend. Fly ash is one of the main solid wastes being utilized in the cement industry. However, problems associated with the use of each type of fly ash (high and low calcium) in cementitious systems (low early strength, undesired expansion, etc.) contribute to the skepticism with which this material is still being handled by a significant part of the industrial world. The present study presents an innovative way to overcome the aforementioned problems, that is, by developing several intermixtures consisting of a high and a low calcium fly ash, both generated in great quantities globally. Their efficacy was examined in terms of pozzolanic potential, compressive strength development, k-values and CH-depletion. It was found that for certain substitution ratios, the new ternary blends outperformed the corresponding binary mixtures, as a result of a synergistic action that took place between the fly ashes used. | en |
