heal.abstract In the framework of new technological developments and international competition, the European industrial mineral wealth needs to be re-evaluated and new research targets set. Re-evaluation should take into account the requirements of modern society and industry, in relation with environmental protection and legislation aspects. The majority of current research projects related to the exploitation of industrial minerals' wastes aim to develop methodologies that contribute towards preserving mineral resources; extending reserves, water and/or energy; increasing recycling rates; and upgrading existing production procedures in parallel with the production of improved quality or new products. Very often these projects address specific market needs such as: (i) production of standard high quality, tailored raw mineral materials with enhanced properties that increase the value of the final products, (ii) production of ready mixes and (iii) development of new / improved products in order to substitute conventional materials or enter new marketplaces. Within this paper, five cases will be presented as examples of integrated industrial mineral and rock waste management. These are: (a) alternative uses of marble wastes, (b) use of aggregates rejects for the production of low quality fillers, (c) exploitation of run-of-mine magnesite fines, (d) treatment of feldspar wastes and by-products for the production of high quality feldspar concentrates and (e) use of olivine-dunite rocks for environmental applications. en
