Field measurements of dissolved oxygen concentration, performed in a small harbour in Attica during spring and summer 1998, are presented. Synoptic surveys during morning and afternoon hours included D.O. concentration and temperature measurements in twenty one sampling stations inside and outside of the harbour basin. Measurements of wind direction and velocity, as well as wave measurements, were also taken. A seasonal trend of increasing water temperatures and decreasing absolute D.O. concentrations was observed. However, percentage saturation was increasing during the same period and sometimes even supersaturation was observed. D.O. concentrations in the harbour basin were found to be lower than those measured outside the harbour, in the vicinity of the breakwaters, in the order of 1-2 mg/l. D.O. concentration was higher in the area of wave breaking and more so with increased wave heights, especially for wind directions causing breaking waves on the breakwater.
