The caustics created at the tips of a inclined crack under biaxial loading were studied using both the closed form and the approximate solutions. Caustics and their initial curves, created by light rays reflected from the front surface of the specimen are presented. The importance of using the closed form solution in determining the KI and KII stress intensity factors by the method of caustics is demonstrated. The relative errors that occur from the closed form and approximate solutions in evaluating the stress intensity factor from characteristic points of the caustics are also presented. Finally the influence of the distance between the specimen and the screen on the method of caustics is demonstrated. |
