The caustics created at the tips of a horizontal crack under biaxial loading were studied using both the closed form and the approximate solutions. Caustics and their initial curves, created by light rays reflected from the front surface of the specimen are presented. The importance of using the closed form solution in determining the K1 stress intensity factor by the method of caustics is demonstrated. The relative errors that occur from the closed form and approximate solutions in evaluating the K1 stress intensity factor from characteristic points of the caustics are also presented. Finally the influence of the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio on the method of caustics is demonstrated. |
