heal.abstract We give some main elements of an analogy that can be established between the continuum-and the discrete mechanical description of granular media (Froiio et al. in prep.). The application of (Cosserat) continuum mechanics to the study of granular media addresses some relevant issues as those of the physical interpretation for the asymmetry of the Cauchy stress tensor and for the couple stress, at the microscale. The proposed analogy relates the balance laws for the two systems (continuum and discrete) limiting the class of the microscale interpretations that can be brought for the aforementioned mechanical features. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group. en
