In this paper we consider the energy management problems that arise in mobile ad hoc networks focusing on mechanisms for energy conservation. Initially, the paper shows why power is considered to be a constraint by discussing the processes by which energy is consumed within the nodes. Our goal is to prove that the use of battery as a basic power provider of the nodes is very restrictive, because of its short lifetime. Furthermore, the operations which lead to the consumption of the power inside mobile nodes are defined, (e.g. the processes followed during the messages exchange between the nodes). Consequently strategies for energy conservation are proposed in order to extend the uptime of the nodes. In addition, the solar cells, an alternative method for energy recharging of the nodes is presented, from a theoretical point of view. Finally the paper examines how power resource limitations affect routing. Copyright © 2005 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. |
