heal.abstract	Various kinds of failure are noticed in practice. Localized failure modes with shear band formation, diffuse modes with chaotic displacement fields and instabilities of geometrical origin are detected. In this paper, it is proposed to focus on diffuse modes. Firstly some undrained triaxial tests, which are axially force controlled, on loose sand are presented and their diffuse failure at the peak value of q is discussed (q characterizes the second stress invariant). Then, the case of axisymmetric q constant loading paths is considered. It is shown that the application of Hill's sufficient condition of stability to these paths can predict diffuse modes of failure, which have been detected experimentally and which remain unexplained until now. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group.	en
