In the present paper we investigate the so-called sand production problem in fluid-flown conditions. The failure of petroleum wells due to sand erosion is a common problem in the operation of petroleum wells in the North-Sea sandstone reservoir. The current investigation proposes a continuum-based three-phase model which captures the main aspects of the sand production process, i.e. the fluidization of single particles (fines are taken away from the coarse material). In addition to hydromechanical fluidization aspects we take care on the deformation behavior of the solid skeleton. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group. |
