Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) is becoming popular for seismic performance evaluation of steel structures. Given that MPA provides useful information on seismic demands imposed by ground motion on regular structures, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of MPA predictions using steel moment frame structures with strength and stiffness irregularities. Seismic demands obtained by MPA are compared with demands from rigorous nonlinear time history analysis. Cases are pointed out in which MPA provides adequate information, and conditions are identified under which MPA predictions are not reliable or may even be misleading. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group. |
