heal.abstract The application of concentrated solar energy in the field of surface coating technology has been studied recently. In the present work, concentrated solar energy was applied to the melting of predeposited WC-17%Co powder as well as the remelting of atmospheric plasma sprayed WC-17%Co powder on 304L SS. The solar treatments were performed at two different installations: the solar furnace, Plataforma Solar de Almeria (PSA), Almeria, Spain (60 kW, 2870 kW/m2) and the 2 kW solar furnace (14 000 kW/m2) at CNRS/ IMP Four Solaire in Odeillo, France. Their different operational characteristics allowed a comparative study on the results. In parallel, thorough microstructural characterization of the treated zones and study of their surface properties (friction and wear) were conducted. Furthermore, the changes in the hardness values and improvement of the tribological and wear behavior obtained were correlated to the changes in the microstructure. © ASM International. en
