Roughness is one of the most important indicators of pavement quality because it directly affects the way pavements serve the road users. The constant demand for safer and more comfortable roads is leading to stricter requirements regarding pavement roughness. In order to achieve such a goal an adequate evaluation method is required. The International Roughness Index (IRI) is a widely used ride quality evaluation index. However the evaluation conducted is subject to limitations by its definition. In addition Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis takes into account only the irregularities of the profile and not vehicle characteristics. In this paper a new index for the evaluation of pavement roughness is being developed based on the PSD analysis data facilitated by the model used for the IRI calculation. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, London. |
