This paper investigates the so-called riser induced damping phenomenon, meaning that the main goal is the calculation of the energy dissipated per cycle due to the motions of the riser in a wet environment and subsequently the derivation of the associated damping coefficients offered to the floating structure. For doing this, the complete nonlinear system of dynamic equilibrium of a catenary riser is considered. The governing system is solved in the time domain without employing any assumption regarding the contribution of the various terms. The efficiency of the method is commented briefly through comparative calculations with other solution methodologies. The evaluation of the linearized damping coefficients for harmonic excitations applied at the top of the structure of various amplitudes and frequencies reveals several interesting characteristics associated with the riser damping components. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group, London. |
