This paper reports on the added value and the limitations of integrated water resources modelling techniques using OpenMI in two significant water management issues within the Pinios river basin (Thessaly, Greece): the issue of reservoir system reliability and the issue of river water quality under varying climatic conditions. OpenMI is an open source, royalty-free, generic standard developed and implemented by an international consortium of major commercial providers, research institutes and universities and currently maintained by the OpenMI Association. The advantage of using OpenMI is that model components which comply (or are configured to comply) with OpenMI may communicate at run-time independently of dimension, coding language, spatial or temporal resolutions. It is argued that despite limitations, OpenMI opens a series of new possibilities for integrated modeling and has the potential to change the perspectives of providers of models and tools within both the professional software development and research communities. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London. |
