heal.abstract Architectural floor plan design is approached with simulated annealing in this paper. A good first approximation is computed to meet optimally the multiple and often contradictory constraints. The available space is split to an arbitrary number of rooms. Each room must satisfy constraints, and, if not, a penalty is imposed. The total penalty is minimized by generating random and appropriate changes to an original design, which are accepted or rejected according to a probabilistic criterion. Gradually, the changes are becoming less agile, until convergence to the optimal solution. The method was implemented into an open source CAD and has been tested with various dimensions and constraints. The method gives promising results, and encourages further study. © 2010 Civil-Comp Press. en
