heal.abstract | Following earlier studies on casualty statistics of large oil tankers (Eliopoulou and Papanikolaou, 2007), the present paper presents early results of a comprehensive study pertaining to casualties of medium size crude oil tankers with deadweight range between 20,000-60,000 tonnes. The investigated data set refer to the post-90 period (1990-2009) and relevant recordings were deduced from the LRF and LMIU casualties' databases. The analysis focused on six major types of incidents, namely collision, contact, grounding, fire, explosion and non-accidental structural failure. With the ultimate goal of this study being the identification of accidental events leading to major casualties (in terms of loss of life, marine pollution, property loss) for medium size tankers, factors characterizing the consequences of an incident, such as the degree of incidents ' severity, event location and ship operating condition at the time of incident, loss of life/injury, oil spill occurrence and the final outcome of the incidents are presented. A comparison of the obtained results for medium size tankers with corresponding ones for the large oil tankers (DWT >60,000 tonnes) enables the identification of important trends in the design of tankers and the safety of oil transport by tankers. | en |
