heal.abstract | Rainwater harvesting is an economical way to supply water for domestic use. The purpose of this thesis is to present two methods for sizing a rainwater harvesting tank based on the local daily rainfall record, the size of the family served, the roof collection area, the type of the roof, the water uses in the house and other factors. Twenty to fourty years of daily rainfall data from five regions of Greece (i.e. Mytilene, Byron Attica, Igoumenitsa, Saint Thomas Crete and Oraiokastro Thessaloniki) were used. It was assumed that the water was used for limited daily use, covering a percentage of the needs of water use. The data was processed using the Microsoft Excel program for both methods and their results were compared. According to the first method, charts were designed showing the differences between cumulative volumes of input and output from the tank for each region. According to the second method, there were charts developed displaying the computed storage volume in the tank, the overflow volume and the volume of water from the public water supply for each area. Also, charts were developed showing the cumulative number of occurrences and relative percentage as function of day with no rainfall, as well as charts presenting the required roof area for a certain percentage p of the household water as function of the number of persons served. Finally, the results of the two methods for these areas were compared. The first method resulted in higher required tank sizes than the second method.
