heal.abstract	Οι πόλεις, μερικά από τα ανθεκτικότερα δημιουργήματα της ανθρωπότητας, πλήττονται από ανθρωπογενείς καταστροφές κατά τον τελευταίο αιώνα με μεγάλη συχνότητα. Καταστροφές οι οποίες έχουν πυροδοτήσει μια σειρά από κοινωνικοοικονομικά προβλήματα, των οποίων η λύση –μεταξύ άλλων– διερευνάται μέσα από τον πολεοδομικό και αρχιτεκτονικό σχεδιασμό. Αξιολογώντας την ικανότητα ανάκαμψης μιας πόλης ορίζεται η «ελαστική ανθεκτικότητά» της. Ένας όρος ακόμα υπό διαμόρφωση, τον οποίο επιχειρούμε να προσδιορίσουμε μέσα από το παράδειγμα της Αμμοχώστου, μιας πόλης στο κατεχόμενο τμήμα της Κύπρου. Η Αμμόχωστος εξελίχθηκε μέσα στην ιστορία άλλοτε ακμάζουσα ως μητρόπολη της Κύπρου και άλλοτε πληγείσα από κάποια καταστροφή. Η πόλη υποφέρει τα τελευταία 41 χρόνια από την περίφραξη του 20% της έκτασής της –του Βαρωσιού– ως αποτέλεσμα της τουρκικής εισβολής το 1974. Πώς ανακάμπτει λοιπόν έχοντας ένα τμήμα της κλειστό, όπου τα ερειπωμένα κτίρια υπενθυμίζουν συνεχώς τον πόλεμο και δεν την αφήνουν να ανακτήσει την απαξιωμένη πολιτισμική της ισχύ; Με αφορμή την επίσημη πολιτική θέση του τουρκοκυπριακού δήμου Αμμοχώστου για άνοιγμα του Βαρωσιού και την επανεγκατάσταση των νόμιμων ιδιοκτητών σε αυτό, διερευνούμε το ενδεχόμενο άνοιγμα της πόλης-φάντασμα, τις πιέσεις που θα δεχθεί και τη δυναμική που κρύβει μια τέτοια κίνηση σε σχέση με την "ελαστική ανθεκτικότητα" της Αμμοχώστου και την ολική ανάκαμψή της.	el
heal.abstract	Cities, some of humankind’s most durable artifacts, seem to be subject to anthropogenic disasters more frequently during the last century. Such disasters have sparked a series of socio-economic problems, whose solution is investigated through urban and architectural design as well. By evaluating the ability of a city to recover, one can assess its “resilience” –a term still under development. Through the investigation of the case of Famagusta in the occupied area of Cyprus, we attempt to give our own definition of resilience. Famagusta has evolved through history sometimes as a thriving metropolis and sometimes as a victim of a total disaster. The city currently suffers from the illegal occupation and the fencing-off of the 20% of its territory –Varosha–, as a result of the Turkish invasion in 1974. How can this city fully recover while dilapidated buildings still stand as a constant reminder of the war? Taking into consideration the official position of the Turkish-Cypriot mayor of Famagusta for the re-opening of Varosha, we investigate the meaning of a possible re-opening of the ghost town, the challenges that the city will face and the effects of such move on the “resilience” of the city and its total recovery.	en
