heal.abstract	This dissertation aims to bring to the fore the night-time city and the ways people experience and appropriate the night-time urban public space. Despite the fact that predominately the urban space is designed and established according to the conditions prevailing during the day-time, we believe that the night-time urban landscape should be taken into consideration during design as it is independent; it has its own characteristics, rhythms and geography. Through a short historical overview of the ways the nocturnal cities were produced, regulated and appropriated we attempted to understand the factors that determined the constantly changing image of the night-time urban space and the human behaviours it induces every time. Considering the current, often overilluminated night-time city, the reconstruction of the night-time urban space and the revitalization of human experience within it are deemed essential. We explore such possibilities through light art and more specifically through the emerging phenomenon of the ephemeral Light Festivals. Light festivals, being a field of exploration, experimentation, innovation, technology and art, that specifically deals with the relation of light and the night-time public space constitute the ideal circumstances in order for us to reflect on the ways the reconstruction of the urban night could be achieved.	en
heal.abstract	Η εργασία πραγματεύεται το νυχτερινού δημόσιου χώρου και τον τρόπο με τον οποίο βιώνεται. Κατά κύριο λόγο ο αστικός χώρος σχεδιάζεται και συγκροτείται ανάλογα με τις συνθήκες που επικρατούν τη μέρα, ενώ η νύχτα θεωρείται μια συνέχεια αυτής. Αντίθετα, πιστεύουμε ότι το νυχτερινό τοπίο έχει τα δικά του χαρακτηριστικά, τους δικούς του ρυθμούς, τη δική του γεωγραφία. Για να κατανοήσουμε τη νυχτερινή εμπειρία της πόλης και της ανθρώπινης συμπεριφοράς μέσα σε αυτή θεωρήσαμε απαραίτητη την ιστορική αναζήτηση των τρόπων με τους οποίους οι νυχτερινές πόλεις παράγονταν, ρυθμίζονταν και βιώνονταν. Οι ποικίλες χρήσεις του τεχνητού φωτισμού ως το βασικό εργαλείο σχεδιασμού των νυχτερινών πόλεων, τόσο για λειτουργικούς όσο και για αισθητικούς λόγους ήταν αυτό που συνέβαλε σε μια συνεχώς εναλλασσόμενη εικόνα του αστικού τοπίου. Αναλογιζόμενοι τη σημερινή εικόνα της αλόγιστα φωτισμένης πόλης κρίνεται αναγκαία η ανασύνθεση του νυχτερινού τοπίου και η αναζωογόνηση της ανθρώπινης εμπειρίας μέσα σε αυτό. Τις δυνατότητες αυτές διερευνούμε μέσα από τη μελέτη του εικαστικού φωτισμού και πιο συγκεκριμένα των ανερχόμενων και συχνών πλέον εφήμερων φεστιβάλ φωτισμού. Τα φεστιβάλ αυτά όντας πεδίο πειραματισμού, καινοτομιών, τεχνολογίας και τέχνης, που πραγματεύονται ακριβώς τη σχέση του φωτός με το νυχτερινό δημόσιο χώρο, αποτελούν ιδανική ευκαιρία για την αναζήτηση μιας τέτοιας συνθήκης.	el
