heal.abstract The IMO Sub Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) is currently developing the second generation intact stability criteria as a means of increasing the level of safety against certain forms of instability in waves. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the methods suggested in the draft regulations by applying them on a sample of vessels and interpreting the results. A modern post-Panamax containership is used for the parametric roll, pure loss of stability and excessive acceleration sample calculations and a purse seiner fishing vessel is used for surf-riding/broaching. Results are visualized, commented and compared to other methods or checked for inconsistencies. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the credibility of the proposed regulations and their capability of actually measuring a ship’s vulnerability to the above forms of instability. en
