heal.abstract	Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία επιχειρεί να υποδείξει τον σχεδιασμό του τοπίου ως κατασκευή, ως μια συνθήκη ιδιαίτερα μεγάλου χρονικού βάθους. Με αυτόν τον στόχο παρακολουθεί τις αναφορές σχετικά με το τοπίο και την κηποτεχνία στην Φυσική Ιστορία του Πλίνιου και τις Επιστολές του Πλίνιου του Νεώτερου. Στο εγχείρημα παίζει κεντρικό ρόλο η έκφραση opus topiarium, υπό την έννοια ενός ευρετικού μηχανισμού με τον οποίο καθίσταται δυνατή η περιήγηση στα κείμενα αναφοράς και την σχετική βιβλιογραφία. Στη συνέχεια παρακολουθείται η εξέλιξη του opus topiarium, ως όρου αλλά και έννοιας, στο πλαίσιο της αγγλικής κηποτεχνίας, μέχρι την ανάδειξη του όρου landscape. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό γίνεται αντικείμενο του κειμένου το ξέσπασμα της θυελλώδους σύγκρουσης του topiary με το ‘νέο’, φυσικότροπο παράδειγμα του αγγλικού κήπου. Επίσης υπενθυμίζεται ο χρονικός προσδιορισμός της ανάδυσης της τοπιακής αίσθησης, σε πολύ σημαντικά κείμενα των Kenneth Clark και Ernst Gombrich, από τα μέσα του 14ου αιώνα και μετά. Εδώ τίθεται υπό συζήτηση τόσο η ακρίβεια, όσο και η αναγκαιότητα του παραπάνω χρονικού προσδιορισμού, μέσα από σύγχρονα κριτικά κείμενα καθώς και την ‘διαδρομή’ του κειμένου από το ρωμαϊκό στο αγγλικό τοπίο. Η συζήτηση αυτή έχει στόχο να βεβαιώσει το χρονικό βάθος της προσέγγισης του τοπίου ως κατασκευής· να προτείνει τελικά, μέσα από την κατασκευή του τοπίου, την κατασκευή του φυσικού.	el
heal.abstract	The thesis attempts to emphasize the considerable time depth relating to the idea of perceiving landscape design as a construction. Towards the aforementioned objective, the text tracks references to landscape within Pliny’s Natural History and Younger Pliny’s Epistles. The expression opus topiariumplays a keyrole navigating Natural History as well as the Epistles, where it is used as a literary heuristic device from one reference to the next within the two texts as well as the accompanying bibliography. The thesis then, focuses on the subsequent adaptation and development of opus topiarium, in lexical and conceptual terms, regarding English gardening, until the emergence of the notion oflandscape. In this context the text follows the passionate debate which ensuedas advocates of the new, ‘natural’ landscape gardening, toppled the established topiarypractices. At this point is discussed the idea of the development of an almost new sensation regarding landscape, as it is presented, in two very important texts by Kenneth Clark and Ernst Gombrich. The argument proposed by Clark and Gombrich, is then discussed regarding its factual accuracy as well as its actual necessity, in the light of criticism presented in referenced texts and the thesis’route through Roman to English landscape. The thesis aims at affirming the depth, in relation to time, of approaching landscape as a construction; to propose, through the construction of landscape, the natural as a construct.	en
