heal.abstract	Η παρούσα εργασία αποτελεί μία αφηγηματική πορεία, που επιχειρεί να εξετάσει την διαρκή εναλλαγή ισορροπιών ανάμεσα στο θρησκευτικό και το οικονομικό στοιχείο, την οικονομία του ιερού, όπως αυτή εκφράζεται χωρικά στην πόλη. Η παρατήρηση επικεντρώνεται σε δύο case studies, όπου σχέσεις εξουσίας και δύναμης πυροδοτούν πρωτοφανείς αστικές μεταβολές. Από τη μία στη Ρώμη, ένας Πάπας της Ώριμης Αναγέννησης οραματίζεται και θέτει τα θεμέλια της Baroque πόλης, έχοντας ως αφορμή τους ναούς – σταθμούς ενός θρησκευτικού προσκυνήματος. Από την άλλη, το σχέδιο του Μανχάταν στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα, χαράσσεται ως ένας απόλυτα ουδέτερος κάναβος που εκφράζει τις επιταγές μιας ανερχόμενης καπιταλιστικής κοινωνίας και αποβάλλει οποιαδήποτε αναφορά θρησκευτικής ή άλλης παράδοσης. Σε κάθε παράδειγμα, τα δίκτυα της κίνησης αναδεικνύονται σε εργαλεία σχεδιασμού και φορείς νοημάτων, αποτελούν τον τόπο ανατροπής του φαινομενικού διπόλου ιερής και κοσμικής πόλης. Από τις μεγαλειώδεις Vistas της Ρώμης και τις πανομοιότυπες λεωφόρους του Μανχάταν, περνάμε τελικά στο χώρο ανάμεσα στις πόλεις και τους άξονες που τις συνδέουν. Από το Las Vegas του Venturi στην City of God του Lagos, η υποδομή του αυτοκινητόδρομου αναδεικνύεται σε προορισμό ενός νέου προσκυνήματος.	el
heal.abstract	The current thesis embarks on a narrative, examining the continuous shift in balance between the religious and the economic, the economy of the sacred, and its manifestation in the city. Research mainly focuses on two case studies, where power and authority trigger unprecedented urban reforms. On the one hand, in the late Renaissance, a Pope envisions and lays the foundations of Baroque Rome, connecting the seven basilicas– stops of a religious pilgrimage. On the other hand, Manhattan’s 19th century plan is drawn as an utterly neutralizing grid, following the dictates of an emerging capitalistic society, while disposing of any reference to tradition, religious or not. Each of the urban patterns highlights the importance of movement systems, both as planning tools and symbolic forms. Through close observation, they are redefined as the loci where the supposed sacred – profane bipolar is questioned. From the grandiose Vistas of Rome and the identical Manhattan Streets and Avenues, we move on to the wide, empty space between cities and their supra-local connections. From Venturi’s Las Vegas to Lagos’ ‘City of God’, the highway infrastructure gradually becomes the destination of a different, brand new pilgrimage.	en
