The present Diploma Thesis deals with the nickel recovery
from
electric arc furnace
slag
wit
h 0,12%
Ni, which originated from the metallurgical plant
of G.M.M. S.A.
LARC
O.
After m
ineralogical examination
,
the recovery of nickel from the slag was
attempted by applying magnetic separation.
The
effect
of the following parameters was studied: grain
size, magnetic field
intensity, thickness of slag
layer, and moisture content. In the current study, tests
were carried out using a hand
-
magnet or high intensity magnetic separator (HIMS).
In the case of hand
-
magnet, the magnetic field intensity was regula
ted by changing
the distance of the magnet from the material. In the case of HIMS, tests were carried
out at two levels of electric current intensity, e.g. at a low level of 0.5 and a high
-
level
of 1A.
Finally
,
there
was
investigated
the
effect

ion of the slag.
The
chemical

clearly
shows
that
nickel
content
in
the
coarser
particles
is higher than that in the finer. More
specifically
,
the nickel content
of the particles

0,84%

In

the
results
show
that
the
magnetic
products
are
characterized
by
low
nickel
conte
nt
and
high
recovery
(
higher
than
90%).
Also, there was obse
rved no significant difference
between magnetic and non
-
magnetic products as regards their grade while,
in some
cases, the nickel content was low enough, not exceeding 0.10% Ni. On
the
contrary
,
tests
with
hand
-
magnet
at
the
minimum
separation
distance
resulted in products of
both high grade (higher than 1% Ni) and recovery. Best
results
were
obtained
for

8
.
00 +4
.
70
mm
, with the grade of the magnetic product reaching
1
.
31%
Ni
and the recovery exceeding
97%.
In
respect
to
the
layer
thickness
of
the
slag
,
better results as concerns recovery are obtained at a monolayer separation. Also, the
si
ze reduction of the material didn’t improve nickel recovery
.
Finally, small increase
of the moisture content in the finer particles of the feed (below 2.80mm) seems to
result in slightly better results, but, for safe conclusions, more detailed investigatio
n
of moisture effect is necessary.
