heal.abstract | A considerable amount of scientific research has highlighted the importance and influence of natural lighting and visual contact with the natural environment, on the well-being of the users of hospital units (the patients as well as the visitors, the medical and nursing staff). It has indeed been shown that the above factors have a significant impact on the recovery process, reducing the time of stay in the hospital and hence the cost of treatment and services provided. Moreover, they enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the staff, helping to their concentration and reduce medical errors. This dissertation examines the effect of natural lighting at inpatient wards, and ways of its control. Theoretical elements of Solar Geometry are mentioned in order to understand the position of the sun. Definitions of key concepts of photometry are given; then is developed the concept of visual comfort and the factors which disturb it are analyzed. We point out the importance of shading and present its types. The lighting of hospitals is also examined, with reference to each part department of them. Subsequently was performed a 3-D design of three wards (two double bed and one four-bed), as well as their photorealistic analysis in two different dates (21/6 and 21/12), at three different hours (9am, 12pm, 3pm) and from three orientations (southwards, 45ν southeastwards, 45ν southwestwards). Furthermore, three different methods of shading were proposed and depicted via the photorealistic program: curtains, blinds - horizontal and vertical - and rollers with two sheets (transparent and absolutely impervious). The analysis results are presented both from the perspective of the visitor who enters the cabin, and of the patients’ – a factor which must be taken into account when designing inpatient wards. Therefore, this paper aims at depicting the effect of the sunlight on the perception of the users of an inpatient ward, and at its optimal utilization through shading systems. | en |
