heal.abstract	Solid Waste Management has always been one of the most pressing issues in Greece. The effects are much more severe in Greek islands such as Cyclades, where limited space, lack of funding and increasing tourism compound the problem. The goal of this thesis is to present an alternate, sustainable approach to island waste management, which will differentiate from the current insufficient methods. Based on a ship specialized for this project, the proposed method will promote the cooperation between islands and will introduce a new and innovative waste transportation management system. The first chapter summarizes the current global, European and domestic waste management methods, while the second chapter presents in detail the current waste management plan in Cyclades, where this project is focused. After the case is described, the third chapter states the assumptions and the goal of this project and sets the basic principles. The fourth chapter explains the use of LNG as the fuel of choice and the fifth chapter determines the necessary requirements and specifications for the waste transporting ship. Finally, the sixth and seventh chapter include the economic feasibility study of the project and the conclusions derived. As it is shown from the present results, although the project presented includes a new and innovative ship, it can be economically viable, provided it is supported by the value of the recyclable materials the ship transfers. The scenarios considered later on, show that the project remains viable, even if certain conditions deteriorate in the future, such as a reduction of transported waste or an increase in fuel prices.	en
