heal.abstract The present thesis, entitled: “Biowaste source separation and composting in a prototype system” describes and examines the performance of an integrated scheme for biowaste management. The scheme included the separate collection of, mainly domestic, biowaste and their subsequent aerobic treatment in an innovative composting unit which was designed and installed under the supervision of the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology, of the School of Chemical Engineering, NTUA, in Tinos island and particularly in the northern part, near the communities of Pyrgos and Panormos Bay. The main objective of this thesis was to examine the separate collection of biowaste in conjunction with their decentralized composting, as an integrated, alternative technical solution, in contrast with the disposal and centralized recovery techniques for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). In more detail: In the first section, there is an introduction to the widely recognized problem of MSW management in modern times, in global, European and local level. The consequences arising from the improper management to the environment, human health and the economy are varied and widely known. It has been found that the dimensions of the problem could become huge in the special case of remote regions, such as mountainous communities and islands due to their particular characteristics. Inspired by the challenge of sustainable management of MSW, the subject of study of this thesis was defined to be the monitoring and evaluation of the performance of a pilot system for decentralized biowaste management in an island region. In addition, this section includes basic definitions and principles related to the prioritization of waste management policy in Europe and in Greece. The second section analyzes the trends and the current institutional framework in the management of MSW, including biowaste, in the light of the strategy of sustainable development and circular economy promoted in the European Union (EU) and Greece. For this purpose, within this section the EU Directives are presented with their respective binding targets for the Member States (MS) and the existing national legislation, as established up to date, as an effort of Greece to comply with the Commissions requirements. The third section includes the analysis of the current status of the natural and built environment and the formerly applied MSW management practices in the study area and a detailed description of the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) for biowaste in the pilot area of Tinos island. Moreover, a presentation is provided of the innovatively designed, in-vessel composting system in which the treatment of the pre-sorted biowaste is done with the aim of producing compost of high purity and quality. In the fourth section, the definition of composting is given, focusing on the analysis of the process steps, materials that may be suitable as substrate for aerobic biological treatment, the main monitoring parameters and the quality control parameters of the final product (compost). Also, closed (in-vessel) and open composting systems are briefly presented regarding existing commercial systems and a comparison is provided. The fifth section is an introduction to the experimental part of this work, namely the protocol of the experimental analyses. Specifically, this section presents the indicators by which the biowaste source separation was monitored in the study area, the control parameters of the composting process for the evaluation of the quality of the finished product (compost) and the detailed description of the laboratory analytical methods used to determine them. The sixth section includes the experimental results in the form of tables and diagrams and the elaborated observations and remarks. More specifically, 12 samples of fresh biowaste were tested and 10 samples of of compost for the following control physicochemical parameters : moisture content (%), volatile solids (%), pH, electrical conductrivity, TOC (%), TN (%), ratio C/N. Regarding the samples of fresh pre-sorted biowaste, collected from the study area, the (mean) measured values for the aforementioned parameters were the following: moisture content 76,73%, VS 89,7 %, pH 5,36, EC 3,2 mS/cm, TOC 50%, TN 2,87%, and C/N 23,66%. For the compost samples, the mena measured values of the selected control parameters were the following: moisture content 56,89%, VS 76,07%, pH 7,94, EC 5,27 mS/cm, TOC 37,29%, TN 1,71%, density 0.32 g/cm 3. Moreover, regarding the heavy metals and biological parameters tested, the compost samples were found within the limit values (EoW 2014) and free of pathogenic microorganisms. The seventh and final section contains the conclusions derived from both the literature review, and the study of the experimental procedures and results. The thesis concludes that nowadays since waste management continues to be a timeless problem for Greece, the island regions, which are closed, sensitive systems are further burdened compared to the mainland by the application of non-rational management practices. International experience has shown that the separation at source combined with the appropriate technology can be a viable alternative for the integrated management of the problem with multiple socio-economic and environmental benefits. Consequently, the examined pilot biowaste management scheme was evaluated as an efficient, integrated and decentralized approach for island regions and may constitute a sustainable 'tool' so that islands like Tinos, and other remote areas to use their particular geographic characteristics as advantages and opportunities for growth and environmental protection, overcoming permanent structural disadvantages. en
