heal.abstract	Saints' Lives are often the best source for the reformation of an entire era, by illuminating unknown aspects of everyday life. This article deals with the Life of Saint Melania and focuses on the historical and geographical elements derived from the pertinent hagiological text. The text narrates Melania’s life, a woman of aristocratic Roman class and her path towards asceticism. The Life, written in the 5th century, provides rich information about the economic context of Late Antiquity, the social classes, the slavery, the position of women and the female asceticism in early centuries of Christianity. Especially illuminating are considered the data concerned with historical geography: the condition of the pilgrimage road, the existence of organized network of inns and stations, the state organization and the service of cursus publicus. In addition, the Life of Saint Melania is considered important for the topography of the Holy Shrines in the Holy Land.	en
