heal.abstract |
The goal of this study is to develop an alternative, more effective, effortless and less time-consuming mooring procedure in comparison to the method which is currently used. The study examines the case of mooring in vulnerable ports under adverse weather conditions (Beaufort 10), simulating the worst-case mooring conditions prevailing in small Greek island
ports during the winter. The procedure involves the projection of a spherical tethered mass from the ship to the port using a pneumatic cannon. The mooring line is connected to the
tether. At the port, the mass is lead by a guiding surface to a winch, where the tether and mooring line are consecutively winded. The design of the mechanisms follows the principles
of Mechanics, Pneumatic Circuits, Electric Machinery, Gear Reducers and Numerical Analysis. The study estimates the dimensions and characteristics of the components, providing a quantitative representation of the space required and a rough estimation of the cost of the installation. This study aims to offer a feasible and cost-effective suggestion towards the improvement of the accessibility of the islands during severe weather. |
