heal.abstract | The fixed copper access network has been for decades the prominent medium for delivering broadband internet services. Although there are modern alternatives such as optical and wireless networks, ISPs continue to develop and upgrade the copper access network in order to maximize the potential of their investment. The main advantage of copper is that there is existing infrastructure reaching every subscriber and as technology progresses, the capabilities of copper broadband access technologies increase. However, it is a rather harsh environment for the propagation of high frequency signals. The aim of this thesis is to present the characteristics of the Greek copper access network and to provide a thorough analysis of the challenges ISPs face as they try to exploit it. Furthermore, the main objective is to present the processes, lab trials and measures followed, in order to effectively introduce VDSL2 technologies into the network. More specifically, this study emphasizes in the utilization of the DPBO mechanism, as a means to safeguard existing technologies from the introduction of VDSL2 in FTTC topologies. The DPBO algorithm is explained in depth and the procedure if configuring all the parameters is being presented in detail. The lab trials and all the results obtained are part of the Greek Telecommunication Regulating Authority’s (EETT) effort to create the first ever Greek Access Network Frequency Plan (ANFP), regulating the spectral characteristics of coexisting xDSL technologies in the Greek copper access network. | en |
