heal.abstract Near field pulse-like ground motions constitute a special category of seismic records with a significant impact on civil engineering projects. They could be referred to as records influenced by the rupture mechanism and directivity phenomena, resulting in the appearance of a predominant pulse in the velocity time-history. The present thesis investigates an alternative simulation method of such records and its applicability to the dynamic time-history analysis of buildings. Furthermore, a characteristic part of the record was defined and extracted, and was then assessed in relation to the entirety of the seismic motion. For this purpose, a total number of 50 records of the NGA (Next Generation Attenuation) database, characterised by Baker (2007) as pulse-like ground motions was considered in the current study. In order to define the “significant part” of each record, the impact of the initial six discrete pulses οn the elastic and inelastic response spectra was examined. The conduct and simulation of the pulses was achieved through the method of Mimoglou et al. (2014), which is based on the mathematical model suggested by Mavroeidis & Papageorgiou (2003). More specifically, a bilinear model was created for the inelastic response spectra with a behaviour factor equal to qy=4, without hardening stiffness and damping ratio 5%. The procedure which was followed, showed that only pulses that appear within the duration of the predominant first pulse, have a significant effect on the response spectra. Therefore, the part of the original record that corresponds to the first wavelet was isolated and considered as the representative part of the records. Σhe accuracy of the simulation was verified by evaluating the inelastic response of a SDOF system, as well as that of a multi-storey building. A 3D model of an 8-storey reinforced concrete building consisted of shear walls, was created via SeismoStruct 2016 and was then imposed to dynamic time-history loading, for the original record and its simulation. The outcome results for both the single and multi-degree of freedom systems, led to the conclusion that the chosen simulation curve constitutes a very good representation of the original record. en
