The aim of the current thesis is to present the different phases of a newbuilding project, as can be viewed from the side of the ship-owner. The analysis is divided into two major parts, as follows: First Part: the analysis starts from the inception of the project and is completed with the signing of the contract with the shipyard that
undertakes the construction of the newbuilding vessel Second Part: describes the involvement of the ship-owner to the
procedures that follow the signing of the contract with the shipyard,
including the review of the plans and drawings, the supervision of the construction, the vessel’s trials and her delivery, etc.
More specifically, this study focuses on the conditions under which the idea of ordering the construction of a newbuilding vessel is formed, analyzing the necessary state in which the newbuilding market should be in order for the ship-owner to make such a decision. In addition, all major documents that establish
the pattern around which the ship will be built are examined, i.e. the following: Letter of Intent. Vessel’s Specification. Contact between the ship-owner and the shipyard. It should be noted that the role of the naval architect to the whole project is
rather active, since he is responsible for reviewing and finally selecting the specifications based on which the vessel will be built and also for the supervision of the construction in order to complete it in the most efficient and optimal way, therefore, the current thesis focuses on describing the parts that
are directly connected to it. However, the ordering and the construction of a newbuilding vessel is a very complex project, thus it involves interaction with many external entities, such as
those responsible for the finance of the project or those responsible for the classification and registration of the vessel after her delivery. In view of their vital role to the project, their role is also presented by analyzing the terms and conditions under which each one is carried out. |
