heal.abstract In the modern mass production industry, in order to stay competitive, products need to be designed and manufactured with conflicting aims such as minimizing time and cost and simultaneously increasing quality and flexibility. CNC machining is probably the primary activity in manufacturing industries. Manufacturers of various types across many industries prefer the advantages of CNC machining for their fabrication and manufacturing applications as it provides efficient, desirable and precise production. However, recent technical improvements in additive manufacturing processes contribute to manufacturing real functional parts and not only prototypes, with a significant reduction in production cost. Far from being adverse or competing processes, additive manufacturing and CNC machining can go together. This type of combination or conversion of a CNC machine into an AM machine is possible to be made without any retrofitting of the existing control unit of the CNC machine, but just by adding an external device. In this thesis, an attempt has been made to combine a Computer Numerically Controlled Machine with a portable stereolithography apparatus in order to expand its capabilities. Moreover, this SLA device designed to be portable in order to be easily carried and placed in any CNC machine. Most of the CNC machines have an RS232 port, which is how the communication between the machine and the portable device is achieved. For the communication, features like macro-programming, Machine Data Collection, and File Numerical Control were also indispensable. Furthermore, developing the portable SLA device, there were required two main portions, mechanical and electronics. This portable SLA device consists of a laser holder tool, a resin vat, a microcontroller and several electronic components such as sensors, actuators, and diodes. A significant part of the procedure was the photocurable polymer resin, which defined the wavelength of the suitable laser diode. Additionally, the programming was an essential part of this project. For the microcontroller, several scripts and libraries were made in C++ programming language. As for the G-code, two scripts were made in MATLAB code. The first one collaborates with a commercially available slicing software in order to make some modifications of the extracted G-code. The second script read the STL file directly and generates the Gcode. Each one is used for different print processes and different laser beam shapes. Finally, the overall focus of this project was to design and construct a low-cost portable SLA device with accuracy and precision in every print. en
