heal.abstract	Η διατριβή εστιάζει στην έννοια της περιγραφής και την αντιθετική -ή συμπληρωματική- έννοια της αφήγησης στην ιστορία της αρχιτεκτονικής, θέτοντας το ερώτημα του αν αφηγούμαστε ή αν περιγράφουμε τον χώρο και με ποιο τρόπο. Επιπλέον διερευνά το νόημα που αποκτά η έννοια του ρεαλισμού ως τεχνική αναπαράστασης και το πώς ο ρεαλισμός και η μίμησις, διεκδίκησαν την σχέση τους τόσο με την περιγραφή όσο και με την αφήγηση. Αντικείμενο της διατριβής είναι η γραφή για την αρχιτεκτονική και συγκεκριμένα ο αφηγηματικός ή περιγραφικός λόγος του Γάλλου Viollet-le-Duc και του Βρετανού John Ruskin. Ο ρεαλισμός προσεγγίζεται αφενός ως μια ιστορικά καθορισμένη σχολή, αυτή του γαλλικού λογοτεχνικού ρεαλισμού του 19ου αιώνα. Το κομμάτι αυτό της έρευνας αντλεί στοιχεία από τη βιβλιογραφία που είναι σύγχρονη με την εμφάνιση του ρεαλιστικού ρεύματος και παρουσιάζει τα χαρακτηριστικά του ρεαλιστικού λόγου όπως προκύπτουν από την κριτική Γάλλων συγγραφέων και αρθρογράφων στον Παρισινό τύπο την περίοδο 1830-1870. Τα κυριότερα από τα στοιχεία αυτά είναι η αληθοφανής αναπαράσταση του πραγματικού κόσμου, η μελέτη του σύγχρονου τρόπου ζωής, η προσέγγιση μέσα από την παρατήρηση, η αναλυτική μέθοδος στην μελέτη χαρακτήρων και η απρόσωπη στάση του συγγραφέα. Με βάση τα χαρακτηριστικά αυτά προσεγγίζεται και το έργο των Viollet-le-Duc και Ruskin που ανήκει στην ίδια χρονική περίοδο. Αφετέρου, η έννοια του ρεαλισμού επανεξετάζεται μέσα από τις θέσεις της γαλλικής θεωρίας της λογοτεχνίας της δεκαετίας του 1960 - της Nouvelle Critique - και την θεμελίωση της νέας επιστήμης της αφηγηματολογίας. Η διατριβή εξετάζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η Νouvelle Critique αποδέσμευσε την έννοια του ρεαλισμού από την αναφορική διάσταση της μιμητικής αναπαράστασης και αμφισβήτησε την άμεση σύνδεσή της με την περιγραφή. Ο ρεαλισμός μέσα από αυτήν την προσέγγιση επανασυστήθηκε ως ένα σύνολο μορφικών αφηγηματικών συμβάσεων και συνδέθηκε εκ νέου με την αφήγηση και την ύφανση της πλοκής. Στο πλαίσιο αυτής της προσέγγισης, η διατριβή βασίζεται στο έργο του Gérard Genette για τον αφηγηματικό λόγο και στην θεωρία του Philippe Hamon για την περιγραφή και επιχειρεί μια «δομική» ανάλυση των κειμένων των Ruskin και Viollet-le-Duc η οποία εστιάζει σε ειδολογικές συμβάσεις, σε αφηγηματικούς και υφολογικούς τύπους αποκαλύπτοντας τα διαχρονικά συμφραζόμενα του κειμένου.	el
heal.abstract	The thesis focuses on the notion of description and the contradictory - or complementary - notion of narration in architectural history writing, posing the question of whether we describe or narrate space and how. It also explores the notion of realism and subsequently of mimesis and how they claimed their relationship to both description and narration. The subject matter of the dissertation is not architecture per se, but the writing about architecture and in particular, the narrative and descriptive discourse of the French architect and architectural historian Viollet-le-Duc and the English art critic John Ruskin. The thesis’ approach to their written work and their relation to the notion of realism is twofold. On the one hand, realism was seen as a historically defined school, that of the 19th century French literary realism. This part of the survey draws on literature that is contemporary with the emergence of the realistic movement, documenting the reactions of French writers and critics writing in the Paris press in the period 1830-1870. The main features of realistic discourse as presented in their work are: the faithful representation of the real world, the analytical study of the modern way of life, the approach through observation, the scientific method in the study of characters, the impersonal attitude of the author. Through these features we read the work of Viollet-le-Duc and John Ruskin that was produced in the same period. On the other hand, the notion of realism was re-examined through the appreciation of the French literature theory of the 1960s - the Nouvelle Critique - and the foundation of the new science of narratology. The thesis focuses on the way by which the Nouvelle Critique disengaged realism from its referential dimension and its direct connection to faithful representation and the notion of description. Realism was reshaped as a set of narrative conventions and was instead re-connected to narration and the weaving of the plot. Our approach is based on Gérard Genette’s narratology and Philippe Hamon’s theory on description and ventures a “structural” analysis of the written work of John Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc that focuses on narrative and formal conventions showing thus the intertextual relations and the diachronic context of texts.	en
