Coastal lagoons are groundwater dependent ecosystems which are playing an important role in coastal defense and wildlife conservation. Such ecosystems are usually affected by human activities which may cause degradation of their ecological status, decline of their diversity, disturbance of their ecological functioning and limitation of their ecosystem services. Gialova lagoon is located in a region mainly dominated by agriculture and tourism activities. In this study we attempt to examine the groundwater quality of the local aquifer system of Gialova, in order to investigate the hydrologic relationship between the lagoon and the aquifer. In particular a groundwater sampling campaign was conducted during September of 2018. After developing a complete inventory of groundwater abstraction points in the surrounding environment of Gialova lagoon and choosing the most representative samples, a field work measurements campaign was organized. The results were the basis to suggest sustainable management guidelines for this area. Moreover an innovative WebGIS platform was developed for visualizing the groundwater data. This application enhances decision-making processes as all the data are opened and accessible for everyone. |
